Excerpts from the 2009 Department of Defense Appropriations Conference Report

Peer-Reviewed Cancer Research Program

“The bill provides $16,000,000 for a peer-reviewed cancer research program that would research cancers not addressed in the breast, prostate and ovarian cancer research programs currently executed by the Department of Defense, and specifically the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC). The funds provided are directed to be used to conduct research in the following areas: $4,000,000 for research of melanoma and other skin cancers as related to deployments of service members to areas of high exposure…The funds provided under the Peer-Reviewed Cancer Research Program shall be used only for the purposes listed above. The Department of Defense is directed to provide a report by March 16, 2009, to the congressional defense committees on the status of this new Peer-Reviewed Cancer Research Program as to the relevance of this type of research for service members and their families.”
